The other day I was scrolling through my feed and I saw Michelle, from Book Adventures, post Ramblings – Are Audio Books Considered “Real” Books? and it inspired me to write about what I thought about audio books.
In January I started reading the Iron Trials by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare and I just couldn’t get into it, I then decided to get it out as an audio book from my local library to see if that would help me get into the book better. I definitely enjoyed the book a lot more than when I was actually ‘reading’ the book.
Michelle talked about the fact that when you are listening to an audio book you still have to visualise the setting and the characters and think about the plot. These two things, I think, are so important when it comes to reading, these two features make the book feel real and overall a lot more enjoyable.
Michelle also talked about the amount of concentration you have to put in when listening to an audio book as you aren’t actually looking at the words and you could be distracted by things going on in your surroundings a lot easier. I one hundred percent agree with that, I found it quite easy to get distracted while listening to an audio book. For me this was quite disappointing as I was kind of hoping to be able to do multiple things, such as cleaning my room or doing the dishes.
One of the things that I really enjoyed about listening to an audio book was that it was easier for me to notice small details, such as cute quotes or nice details the author/s have put in. I am quite a fast reader and quite often I miss small details such as a funny line or a beautifully written sentence. I think it really made me appreciate the amount of effort that an author/s put into a novel and how they add little things that make the book that much more enjoyable.
Another thing that I loved about listening to an audio book was the feeling of nostalgia that came with it. I usually listened to the audio book before I went to be each night which reminded me of when my mum used to read to me each night when I was little. This made the experience a lot more enjoyable.
So that was all my thoughts and feelings/my response to Michelle’s blog post of audio books.

I don’t understand why listening to an audio book wouldn’t “count” as reading, unless you’re literally trying to teach a child how to read. Storytelling started out as an oral art and there’s nothing about print that would seem to make it an inherently superior medium when transmitting that story (aside from obviously making a record of the changes to the story). I actually find it harder to listen to a story than to read one. I need to concentrate more and certainly can’t multitask.
I’m not surprised audio books are more expensive, either. They have to pay the narrator and for all the equipment used to make it, and I’m sure that adds up.

Good point, I guess everyone has a things they find helpful and not. I’m guessing it would also be more expensive to put the audio onto discs than words on a page.

Nice post! I’ve been hesitant to buy an audio book, but after reading this, I think I’ll give one a try.

Yeah Id totally reccomend you trying one out. I personally wouldn’t buy one as they’re very expensive and because I’d prefer to have a physical copy of a novel. If you were to try audio books out I’d recommend that you borrow one from the library first.

I didn’t realize they were more expensive than a normal book. Sometimes, I see them for a few dollars on Amazon, but that must’ve been a sale. That’s good to know because I also like to a have a either an ebook or physical copy. The library is a great suggestion. Thanks!

I know on book depository they are quite expensive, but I’ve never really looked into buying one

I’m so glad I inspired you 🙂 Great post & very valid arguments* I still listen to my audio books, but recently only when I’m in bed and my eyes are too tired to actually read.

Ive heard that some people read and listen to the book especially when studying a book for school. Maybe it’d also be helpful for people with dyslexia too, but I’m not sure.
